Become A Surrogate Mother

How To Become A Surrogate Mother

Only a certain type of woman has the ability to become a surrogate mother. Such women are carefully screened to ensure they are unlikely to bond with the baby after delivery in the same way as biological mothers. It has been noted that during the pregnancy, surrogate mothers often form a relationship with the couple rather than the child in their womb.

There are various aspects to consider when you want to become a surrogate mother as it is an emotionally and physically demanding task to become a surrogate mother. It is therefore important that a woman considering this option has the backing of a partner, family or friend to provide emotional support and practical help throughout and after pregnancy.

A surrogate mother is required to be medically and psychologically screened to ensure that she understands the surrogacy process and is medically fit to carry a baby. Once the baby is born, the surrogate mother has no further responsibilities towards the intended parents. If the surrogate mother indicates that she wants to keep in contact with the family or the baby after the birth, referral to the surrogacy agreement is suggested as this will be a decision that will have to be made by both parties.

A surrogate mother can either work through an agency or act independently. As an independent surrogate mother you will have to handle all the paper work and fees yourself.

Tips and warnings on how to become a surrogate mother through an agency:

  • Visit more than one agency or meet with many couples before you make any decisions about surrogacy
  • Be honest with the agency and the couple. Express all of your fears and concerns
  • According to law, agencies and couples will require you to have had at least one successful pregnancy in order to be a surrogate mother
