I am a specialist attorney and Director of Adele van der Walt Inc., with a practice in fertility, reproductive and medical law dating back to 1999.
For three decades, my work has focused on the legal issues arising at the intersection of law, medicine, technology and ethics, with particular expertise in assisted reproduction, surrogacy, donor conception, embryos and gametes, fertility clinic governance and reproductive rights.
I advise intended parents, fertility clinics, medical practitioners, embryologists and other professionals on complex legal and medico-legal matters, including surrogacy applications, donor agreements, embryo disposition, posthumous reproduction, consent, regulatory compliance, medical negligence and High Court applications.
My practice is grounded in the belief that fertility and reproductive law requires both rigorous legal analysis and an understanding of the medical, ethical and human realities involved. I work closely with healthcare professionals and other specialists to develop practical, legally sound solutions to complex and often highly personal matters.
Alongside legal practice, I contribute to professional education and legal discourse through publications and presentations. I am particularly interested in the development of South African fertility and reproductive law and in the legal and ethical challenges emerging from advances in assisted reproductive technology.
My long-term focus is on contributing to the development of this specialised area of law in South Africa, while engaging with international developments in reproductive law, reproductive rights and fertility governance.
